Google Ads has handed us a new steering wheel, but we still don’t control the engine. Demand Gen channel prioritization controls let you influence spending order, not split the budget however you want. The difference seems minor until you expect a cap and find out it was only a preference. Funny that.

How do Demand Gen channel prioritization controls work?

Demand Gen channel prioritization controls classify two broad groupings as high or low priority. High-priority channels try to spend budget before low-priority ones, always within the target CPA or target ROAS you have set.

Google began its phased global rollout on October 15, 2026. The feature may appear sooner or later depending on the account, campaign type and launch schedule, as explained in the official prioritization and allocation documentation.

By default, all channels are set to high priority. You can change that classification at account, campaign or shared-budget level, but not from a manager account. There is also no support for the Google Ads API or Google Ads Editor yet.

Which groupings can you order? Google Channels and the Google Display Network. That’s it. Much less granular than the name might suggest.

Prioritization, allocation and manual selection: three different things

Prioritization decides which grouping tries to spend first. Allocation sets a reference daily percentage for low-priority channels. Manual selection determines where an ad group can appear. Mix them up and you have the perfect recipe for configuring one thing while expecting another.

As of October 27, 2026, Demand Gen supports prioritization, but NOT daily percentage allocation. Google says that second option will arrive later in 2026, without publishing a specific date. Both the official operational documentation and the Demand Gen campaign creation guide confirm this.

Even once allocation becomes available, it will not be a hard cap. Google defines it as a best-effort limit calculated against the average daily budget. It may be exceeded on some days, does not guarantee spend, and resets daily.

The existing manual controls live at ad group level. There, you can choose YouTube, including in-stream, in-feed and Shorts, as well as Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network. The Demand Gen channel controls guide details those options and recommends keeping automatic selection for most advertisers.

How to decide whether to enable prioritization

Before changing priorities, check whether the campaign is budget-constrained. With target CPA or target ROAS and enough budget, Google’s own documentation warns that prioritization will usually not change how spend is distributed.

I would start by reviewing the bidding strategy and whether the budget is genuinely limiting delivery. Then compare the two groupings and set the one that best supports the business goal to high priority. Write down the date of the change, please. Eyeballing it three days later is a great way to fool yourself.

I would not touch several levers at once. If you change priorities, budget, creative assets and the CPA target in the same afternoon, you will see movement. What you will not have is a remotely decent explanation for why it moved.

I would also monitor volume, CPA or ROAS, and spend distribution over a period appropriate for that account. I cannot give you a universal number of days because the sources do not provide one, and it depends on the available volume. Making up a timeframe looks lovely on a checklist, but it does not improve any campaign.

To me, this control is useful for telling the algorithm where you want it to start looking when the money does not stretch to everything. “Taming” Demand Gen sounds great, but what you have here is operational influence. Absolute control? Not a chance.

Why doesn’t Demand Gen prioritization work sometimes?

The likeliest reason is that there is no budget constraint forcing the system to choose. If a campaign using target CPA or target ROAS can spend without hitting its budget, moving a grouping to low priority will generally not create the shift you expect.

Another possibility is simpler: the feature has not appeared in your account yet because the rollout is phased. Google announcing global availability does not mean every account gets the button on the same day.

Then there is the expectation problem. Low priority does not mean a channel is blocked. Nor does it mean a maximum percentage, guaranteed reservation or exclusion. To exclude or select specific placements, you need to use ad-group controls, knowing that isolating channels can reduce overall efficiency.

This distinction matters especially after other inventory and measurement changes in Demand Gen. We have already seen that Demand Gen updates can provide more data without proving, by themselves, a better return on investment. A new control does not deserve applause until it produces a better decision.

My take: more influence, still little control

Prioritization is useful, and it is late. It lets you express a preference without dismantling campaigns, but Google retains the final decision because delivery is still shaped by bidding, goals and available opportunities.

The available sources provide no independent evidence of improvements in CPA, ROAS or volume. Nor can I sell you hands-on experience that does not exist: the phased rollout makes it impossible to claim that this guide has been validated in a specific account.

In my view, smart consultants who manage this dance with scripts and their own automation will come out ahead. When API support arrives, logging changes, detecting deviations and generating alerts will matter more than collecting buttons in an interface.

Demand Gen channel prioritization controls are a reasonable signal for budget-constrained campaigns. Nothing more. If you treat them as guaranteed allocation, Google will not have taken control away from you, you will have handed it over by skipping the fine print.
