Google wants you to stop filling carts across half the internet and start filling just one: its own. Google’s Universal Cart brings together products from different retailers across Search and Gemini, sends price-drop alerts and guides users through to purchase. Convenient for shoppers. Much less so for any ecommerce business that still believes the product page is the centre of the universe.

What is Google Universal Cart?

Google Universal Cart is a shopping experience that lets users save and manage products from different retailers in one place. Progress is retained across compatible Google services, so users do not have to rebuild their selection every time they switch searches or contexts.

Google announced on October 15, 2026 that Universal Cart was beginning its rollout in the United States through Google Search and the Gemini app. One important caveat: “rolling out” does not mean it has reached every US account already.

The company had already introduced the concept at Google I/O on May 19, 2026. At the time, it said the feature would arrive in Search and Gemini in the United States, while YouTube and Gmail were left for later. Lumping them all together now would be getting ahead of the announcement itself.

Universal Cart can also alert users to price drops and restocked items. It does this using the Shopping Graph, which Google says contains more than 60 billion continuously updated product listings. It can also display promo codes and, because it is built on Google Wallet, help users choose a payment method based on its perks.

My take on the promise is simple: fewer tabs, fewer carts abandoned through sheer distraction, and more help with the decision. The fine print is that Google gains another privileged position between purchase intent and checkout.

How does a purchase from Universal Cart work?

Universal Cart supports two journeys: certain purchases can be completed with Google Pay within Google’s surfaces, while a prepared cart can also be transferred to the retailer’s website. Not every transaction has to follow the same route.

The second journey involves UCP, the Universal Commerce Protocol. Do not confuse it with Universal Cart: the cart is the consumer experience; UCP is the protocol that connects retailers to that experience and to other Google commerce features.

The initial version of the cart API lets a cart be created in Search or Gemini and transferred to the seller’s website. The transfer is one-way. For now, it cannot update, delete or synchronise that content again later.

That may sound like a technical detail, but it defines the current product rather well. Google prepares the basket and hands it to the retailer. From there, the store has to handle the landing experience, keep prices and inventory consistent, and make sure the transition does not feel like changing trains with three suitcases.

The retailer remains the merchant of record. It also remains responsible for confirming the purchase and supporting the customer. Google does not formally become the seller, although it does occupy an increasingly valuable part of the journey before the transaction.

What does this mean for ecommerce?

My view is that the website loses some of its prominence during the selection phase. Users can compare, save products, receive alerts and organise their purchase inside Google’s ecosystem before they ever set foot in the store.

Ecommerce is not going away, but it will have to earn the final stretch.

Here is the trap many will miss: if users arrive with their cart already decided, the product page no longer does as much of the persuasion work. The pressure shifts to catalogue quality, price consistency, shipping costs, trust and a frictionless checkout. The shop window matters less; the plumbing matters MUCH more.

In my view, measurement becomes a headache too. If discovery and part of cart-building happen outside the website, correctly attributing credit to each channel will become harder. Official sources have not published conversion results or explained how all that attribution will work yet. Promising sales gains based on this data would be pure smoke and mirrors.

Google does not need to replace retailers to gain power. It only needs to control the product list, alerts, promotions and the moment when the consumer decides to buy. The seller keeps the transaction; Google gets a large share of the context that drives it.

Can a retailer start using it now?

There is no automatic activation for every store. Google requires businesses to prepare Merchant Center, apply for access through a waitlist and receive approval to operate in Search AI Mode and Gemini.

The official UCP documentation distinguishes between native payment inside Google and transferring the cart to the retailer’s website. It also warns that the protocol is still evolving. In plain English: there is a product, there is documentation and there is a rollout, but parts are still moving.

For a Spanish retailer, looking for a magic button that is not yet confirmed for its market is not especially useful. The job is to review Merchant Center health, inventory quality, the match between advertised and final prices, and measurement of traffic arriving from Google surfaces.

Preparing means stopping the guesswork about regional requirements and fixing what already causes catalogue disapprovals, price discrepancies or checkout abandonment. Not glamorous work. Also the work that stops you losing money.

Google Universal Cart changes who controls the purchase

Universal Cart reduces friction for consumers and opens up a new journey for ecommerce. Both things can be true at once. Google makes buying easier, but it also reinforces its role as the layer for discovery, comparison and decision-making.

There is no confirmed availability or official date for Spain and the EU. Keep watch; do not oversell it. But waiting for the regional announcement before sorting out your catalogue and understanding attribution would be turning up late with British punctuality.

Google Universal Cart does not kill the online store. It takes away some of its stage and leaves it with the most delicate moment: delivering on the promise when the customer decides to pay. That is where we will see who had a solid ecommerce operation and who merely had a pretty website.
