What is Gemini 3.8 TTS, and what has Google launched?

Gemini 3.8 TTS is a family of two voice-generation models: Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS. Google introduced them on 23 September 2026, and the Gemini API release notes classify them as generally available as of the previous day.

There are two models, each with its own job. Google positions Flash TTS for long-form narration, complex dialogue, character design and expressive delivery. Flash-Lite targets high-volume work, low latency and lower cost, according to the official Google announcement.

Both support Spanish, single- or multi-speaker generation, voice design, and control over style, pace and certain vocal events. The technical speech-generation documentation lists more than 130 languages for Flash TTS and more than 100 for Flash-Lite.

On paper, it sounds great. Those are still the manufacturer’s claims. We do not yet have an independent test showing how well a voice holds up across a long campaign, how it handles unusual brand names, or how many takes it needs before it stops sounding like an overconfident elevator announcer.

For a narrative campaign, audiobook or dialogue-driven characters, I would choose Flash. For multiple asset versions, spoken catalogues or high-volume automation, I would test Flash-Lite first.

Until 31 December 2026, the published standard pricing sets input for both models at $0.50 per million text tokens. Audio output costs $9 per million tokens for Flash TTS and $6 for Flash-Lite TTS. There is also a free tier.

API cost is only one part of the equation. You have to write for the ear, review pronunciations, check rights, maintain consistency and listen to the full result. Yes, all of it. Automating a 40-minute podcast only to discover after publishing that the brand changes accent at minute 37 is a remarkably creative way to save money.

Creating human-sounding voices will eventually become a commodity. In marketing, the advantage will lie in building a sonic guide: approved pronunciations, pacing, intensity, pauses, banned words and criteria for deciding when a real voice should come in. The model supplies the vocal cords. The brand still needs judgement.

And that opens up another possibility: connecting voice, character and conversation. If a company goes down that route, it is best to establish from the start who approves that identity and where it can be used.

How to test Gemini 3.8 TTS without turning it into a circus

My recommendation is to test Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS with a short, repeatable piece, compare it with Flash TTS and decide with your ears, not Google’s slide deck. Use a voice designed from text and avoid replication until consent, rights and territorial availability are completely sorted out.
