How to Audit Brand Cannibalization in PMax

The audit starts in one specific place: the PMax search terms report. Open your campaign, go to Insights > Search Terms, and filter by your brand name, products, and variants, including the misspellings your customers make every day. What you're looking for: what percentage of impressions, clicks, and conversions come from branded queries.

If the number is high, you have a problem. On r/DigitalMarketing, a user shared recently that after seven weeks running PMax for a small e-commerce store, 60% of conversions came from people who had searched the brand name, people who were already arriving through organic. They activated brand exclusions and spend shifted toward close variants and misspellings. Brand leakage doesn't close on its own.

Google Ads brand exclusions, introduced in 2024, are your first line of defense. Create a list in Tools > Shared Library > Brand Lists with your brand, variations, and common misspellings. Then apply it to each PMax campaign under Settings > Brand Exclusions. They cover Search, Shopping, and YouTube Search.

Complement with negative keywords at the campaign and account level. At the account level you have a limit of 1,000 negative keywords; at the PMax campaign level, up to 10,000. Use account-level negatives for the most obvious branded terms and campaign-level ones for variants that slip through.

And here's what few people talk about: brand exclusions and negative keywords ONLY apply to Search, Shopping, and YouTube Search. Display, Gmail, Discover, and Maps are out of scope. PMax can still serve ads featuring your brand across those channels with no clean visibility into it. The placements report gives you hints, but visibility is partial. I'd bet that in most accounts there's Display leakage nobody has ever measured.

What should you expect after applying exclusions? PMax's reported ROAS will drop. Guaranteed. And that's good news: it means you're seeing real performance, the kind that comes from users who didn't know you before. PMax never stops learning. Terms you exclude today reappear tomorrow as new variants, fresh misspellings, or navigational queries you hadn't anticipated. Weekly review of the search terms report and cross-attribution audit between PMax and your brand campaign every two weeks, at a minimum.

The recommendation I always give, and develop in detail in the complete Google Ads guide, is to keep a separate branded Search campaign with manual control. It's your safety net: it defends your impression share, gives you clean data, and lets PMax do what it should: bring you new customers. If you also want to prioritize channels within PMax, the brand audit is the mandatory first step.

And there's a perverse loop here that few people mention. ROAS inflated by brand cannibalization creates a feedback cycle: the report says PMax is performing brilliantly, the client increases budget, PMax uses that extra budget to cannibalize EVEN MORE branded traffic, and ROAS keeps climbing. And Google, of course, is delighted: you spend more.

Breaking that loop starts with an honest audit. Twenty minutes with the search terms report, well-placed brand exclusions, and surgical negative keywords. Suddenly you see your PMax for what it is: a prospecting campaign with real performance. Not a mirage inflated by your own brand name.
